Selection depends on the clinical task, tooth condition and willingness to follow instructions. Neither method is best for everyone. Appearance, limitations, care and the overall plan are considered.
The appointment starts with examination and discussion of goals. Imaging, photographs, impressions or scans are prescribed as indicated. Teeth and gums, preparation needs and treatment sequence are assessed before choosing an appliance.

After active treatment, the retention method, retainer wearing schedule and review appointments are discussed.
Before fitting an orthodontic system, active caries and gum inflammation must be treated and home oral hygiene established. During treatment the dentist monitors tooth movement and tissue condition. Keeping scheduled appointments and following care instructions reduces the risk of enamel demineralisation, gum inflammation and prolonged treatment.

After teeth have moved, their position needs to be maintained. Retainers may be fixed or removable; the clinician determines the type and schedule. Follow care and review advice and contact the clinic if an appliance is damaged. A fixed duration of results cannot be guaranteed.
