What are ceramic veneers?

These are thin ceramic coverings for the front surface of teeth. They are fabricated from individual records and bonded to the prepared surface. A veneer covers less of the tooth than a crown; extensive damage may call for a different restoration.

When ceramic veneers may be considered

Persistent discolouration, chips, certain shape defects and gaps in the smile zone may be reasons for a consultation. Suitability depends on remaining tooth tissue and bite. Uneven tooth position does not mean veneers can replace orthodontic treatment.

Ceramic veneer materials

Ceramic materials differ in optical properties and processing methods. Shade and translucency are chosen with the original tooth colour and neighbouring teeth in mind, while restoration design considers enamel and loading. E-max is one option, rather than a universally best choice.

E-max veneers

E-max veneers use lithium-disilicate ceramic. Selection considers shade, translucency and bonding to remaining tooth tissue. Suitability and fabrication method are agreed after diagnosis.

How ceramic veneers are fabricated

Fabrication depends on the selected material and laboratory or digital protocol. CAD/CAM involves digital design and fabrication; pressing is a different laboratory process. CEREC is a digital fabrication system, not a separate material. The specific protocol, try-in and timing are discussed during planning.

What affects the cost

Cost considers material, the number of teeth restored, fabrication method and preparation. Any prior tooth or gum treatment is discussed separately in the treatment plan. Describing placement stages does not mean every procedure is automatically included in the general tariff.

Tooth preparation

Before fabrication, enamel, gums and bite are assessed and prior treatment is provided if needed. Preparation depends on the original tooth shape and restoration. No preparation or a fixed thickness cannot be promised for every patient; irreversible preparation and alternatives are discussed beforehand.

Stages of ceramic veneer placement

1. Diagnosis and planning

   Examination and investigations as indicated, discussion of alternatives, shape and shade selection, and agreement on a treatment plan.

2. Preparation and fabrication

   Tooth preparation, impressions or digital records, and fabrication using the agreed protocol. The dentist decides whether a temporary restoration is needed.

3. Try-in, bonding and review

   Shape, shade, fit and contacts are checked, the veneers are bonded and the bite reviewed. Aftercare and follow-up are then agreed. The number of visits depends on preparation and fabrication method.

Limitations and safety

Decay, gum inflammation, insufficient remaining tissue, bite characteristics and bruxism may change the treatment plan. Material tolerance and pain control are discussed with the dentist. Material selection and bonding checks are important but do not eliminate the risk of chips, discomfort or other complications.

Service life and aftercare

Service life depends on material, tooth condition, loading, hygiene and follow-up. Clean teeth and interdental spaces, avoid chewing hard objects and attend reviews as advised. A guard for bruxism is assessed individually. Contact the clinic for chips or discomfort.
